Dot Card Bingo
Start with 1’s, 2’s, 5’s, 10’s.
Materials needed:
- Set of Dot Cards
- Bingo Card for each student (see links below)
- pencil
1) Separate dot cards by creating a pile containing only multiplication expressions with 1's, 2's, 5's, and 10's. You will have 42 cards in this pile.
2) Give each student a Bingo Card for the 1's, 2's', 5's and 10's. See below for printing cards. Place all dot cards face down in the middle of the table in a pile.
3) First student draws cards and states the multiplication problem on card. All students write the expression their paper. Student who drew card must give answer by either
a) counting dots,
b) skip counting the dots, or
c) simply stating the answer for the multiplication expression.
4) The teacher can begin the skip count method for students who are having difficulties. Teacher says: "We must find 9 times 5. So let's skip count our 5's, nine times." Using fingers the teacher counts out loud: "5, 10, 15" and then completes the counting silently. This helps the student begin the process and find the answer on his or her own.
5) Students place X on the number if 40 appears on their card. Next student draws card and states expression. Play continues until any student has Bingo. Play can continue until second player has bingo or until blackout (when all numbers on the card are covered). One Bingo game lasts about 15 minutes. Continuing the game to blackout requires an additional 15 minutes.
Note to Teacher/Parent: Even if student can solve multiplication expression, show skip count method so that ALL students are aware of how to arrive at the answer.
Additional rounds:
Add multiples of 3’s to the dot cards. Show students how to skip count 3’s by adding three, counting on 3 fingers repeatedly, or singing skip count song.
Continue with remaining multiples.
